Ford has received notable recognition for its safety protocols. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has conducted its yearly tests to determine vehicle crashworthiness and safety. 2016 Ford F-150 IIHS Top Safety Pick
The IIHS grades new vehicles on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal, and poor. In order to be considered a Top Safety Pick, vehicles need to earn a “good” score on five crash tests: Small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. Additionally, vehicles need to earn a “basic” rating for front crash prevention systems that may be included.
The 2016 Ford F-150 performed well in all tests. Intrusion into the driver’s compartment was minimal, and the area was well maintained. The crash test dummy seated inside did not move in an excessively out-of-control manner, and measurements taken from it indicated low risk of serious injury. The safety features that helped protect the dummy include front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags, helping to ensure protection for all passengers at all angles. The truck also includes electronic stability control and roll stability control to help keep the vehicle in balance, which is especially important during off-road excursions. Helping the Ford F-150 earn its score was the optional collision warning system, which uses sensors on the front of the truck to warn of sudden potential frontal collisions.
